Athletics are an exceptional way for students to experience new challenges, friendships, and memories. All students are strongly encouraged to participate in our athletics program, and we make sure there are a variety of offerings to appeal to the personal preferences of our students.

Calgary Academy has a sport for every student, with some but not all teams requiring tryouts.

Almost all our sports are available for students in Grades 7–12 (football and rugby are for Grades 10–12 only). Calgary Academy is affiliated with the Calgary Independent Schools Athletic Association for junior (Grades 7–9) and senior (Grades 10–12) sports and the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association, which oversees all high school age sports in the province.

We also offer the Grade 6 Challenge as an introduction to Knights Athletics. We partner with local schools in small tournaments aligned with our regular athletics seasons. Students practice in their physical education classes in the weeks before competing.

The Grade 6 Challenge is available for the following sports:

  • Volleyball
  • Basketball
  • Soccer
  • Badminton

Show Your Pride

Athletics are some students’ favourite aspects of school. However, the games aren’t what our student-athletes remember—it’s their overnight tournaments, the smiles of their cheering teammates, and the feeling of achieving what once seemed impossible.

Students can feel pride for their school and themselves when they wear their Knights jerseys.

Meet Our Head of Athletics

Meet Our Head of Athletics

Nick Waterbury is a passionate supporter of school-based athletics. He has been an athletic administrator for 16 years and a physical education teacher for the same amount of time. Growing up in Calgary, Nick has played, officiated, and coached sports at all levels. He uses this experience and passion for sports to motivate student-athletes to bring out the best in themselves and push the coaches within the program to grow and become the best leaders they can be.

Nick has been a member of the Executive Committee for the Calgary Independent Schools’ Athletic Association for 12 years, where he has built strong relationships with other athletic administrators in the city and province. He is always looking for ways to grow the Knights Athletics program and is very excited each year to see the large number of student-athletes involved. Go, Knights!
