Course Overview

Physical education (phys-ed) encourages students to move, explore, and grow through play. Students build lifelong habits as they develop coordination, teamwork, confidence, and resilience through various activities.

Phys-ed is a mandatory course in Grades K–10, becoming an optional course afterwards.

Learning by Grade Level

Grades 10–12

In Grades 10–12, students develop the skills and attitudes necessary for better health and wellbeing, embracing an active lifestyle. Students will engage in physical activity across five different curricular dimensions: alternative environments, dance, games, individual activities, and gymnastics.

Sports Performance

Sports performance is a comprehensive program that builds a strong foundation in athletic training. It emphasizes holistic athletic development, focusing on strength, agility, and endurance.

The program is ideal for aspiring athletes and fitness enthusiasts and supports individual and team performance.

Students complete a comprehensive program to build their athletic training foundation, learning about strength, agility, endurance, and the importance of nutrition. The program also examines the relationship between Sport and Society, exploring its broader social impact.

Dance

Dance 15, 25, and 35 provide opportunities for students who would like to pursue dance beyond the Alberta Physical Education Program of Studies. It also offers students the opportunity to study dance as an integral part of fine and performing arts programs.

This course series is intended to provide students with the foundations of dance. It is designed to foster in students an understanding and appreciation of, curiosity about, and a lifelong interest in dance. It is also designed to expose learners to a broad range of artistic and aesthetic experiences from a variety of dance genres and traditions. In dance 15, 25, and 35, students will have the opportunity to develop:

  • Physical, social and emotional skills
  • Technical proficiency
  • Contemporary and historical appreciation
  • Positive self‐concepts
