Photography
Photography allows students to develop their photographic eye. With off-site trips, learners have many opportunities to test their classroom skills.
Course Overview
Photography blends technical knowledge about camera function, creative thinking, and composition. Students learn through hands-on experience and personalization. They develop their knowledge and expertise in photography by exploring various genres, techniques, and applications.
This course transitions students from casual "snappers" to intentional image-makers using DSLR cameras and relevant editing programs. By mastering the technical mechanics of the camera and the creative principles of art, students will learn to capture the world around them with skill and finesse.
Learning by Grade Level
Grade 10
In Grade 10, Photography students learn the basics of camera operation and exposure, building a foundation they will continue to strengthen in Grades 11 and 12. Students are introduced to composition techniques and digital processing to create impactful and aesthetic images. They explore different lenses and lighting, work collaboratively and independently, and put a personal spin on each assignment.
Grades 11–12
In Grades 11–12, students go beyond photography basics to create art. Photos are used as a means of communicating a message or mood through composition, colour, lighting, and editing. Students complete independent research and gain experience working with clients and capturing photos of the school community to help bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace.
Using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, students develop an understanding of professional-level post-processing and start to establish their own unique style.
