Outdoor Education
Outdoor education (OE) offers learners the unique opportunity to build skills through day and overnight excursions and classroom lessons.
Course Overview
Trips into Alberta’s (and other provinces’) surrounding nature follow REACH and Leave No Trace principles, ensuring we treat our outdoor classrooms with respect. There are additional fees to help cover field trips and excursions in Grades 10–12.
As students prepare throughout the semester, they collaborate and problem-solve to ensure a smooth, safe, and fun trail experience.
Students can participate in several outdoor (and indoor) activities, including:
- Climbing
- Paddling
- Bushcraft
- Backpacking
- Canoeing
- Stand-up paddleboarding
- Cross-country skiing
- Trail hiking
- Snowshoeing
Learning by Grade Level
Grades 7–9
In Grades 7–9, outdoor education is a combination of instruction in environmental issues, responsible outdoor recreation, and positive group dynamics, with the goal of participating in a day hiking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing day trip.
Grades 10–12
In Grades 10–12, students will continue to build on their skills and class concepts. The course focuses on outdoor recreation and environmental sustainability, leadership, and an introduction to the world of guiding, culminating in a multi-day off-site trip.
