Headwater Learning Foundation (HLF) is the primary fundraising arm and is the organization that safeguards the assets of Calgary Academy. Housing all business services, HLF provides the resources necessary to unleash possibilities in learning and innovation as well as fundraising initiatives.

About the Role

Reporting to the Director of Advancement, the Associate Director of Fund Development will advance the culture of philanthropy by developing and managing capital giving, annual donors, and fundraising events. This role is responsible for creating a strategic and innovative fundraising plan to support Calgary Academy’s Master Facilities Plan, as well as building sustainable and effective donor relations to support growth and evolution of the organization.

You will be the voice of our vision and future success to donors, philanthropists and other stakeholders. You will be part of a small but mighty team that is fueled by the school’s philosophy and mission and your contributions will add to the expertise of this dynamic team. You will be managing a team of two talented individuals who will help support fund development and alumni relations. A passion for children and education is considered a strong asset for this role. This attitude guides our operation and decision-making process and is important to keep in mind when applying for this role.


  • Provide vision and leadership to advance a culture of philanthropy
  • Strategize, plan and manage the development of the long-term annual fundraising and capital campaigns
  • Cultivate existing and new relationships with stakeholders
  • Coordinate participation of president, board members, staff and volunteers in cultivation and solicitation calls
  • Prioritize fundraising initiatives based on ROI and short and long-term objectives
  • Understand and promote school priorities in all fundraising activities
  • Identify and implement sustainable best practices in the fundraising space
  • Collaborate with Communications function on associated marketing information used in the development of publications, brochures, etc. as it relates to fundraising
  • Create new strategies for donor identification, cultivation, and solicitation of new donor prospects
  • Develop and execute strategies for appropriate donor stewardship
  • Oversee development, monitoring and tracking of gift agreements, pledges, and scholarship renewals
  • Build and manage an integrated portfolio of donors, ensure relevant correspondence documented in donor files
  • Manage and assume a leadership role overseeing all donor communication


  • A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in major gifts and annual giving
  • Proven track record of cultivating and securing major gifts/sponsorships
  • Superior relationship building skills with ability to interact with a variety of stakeholders
  • Strong organizational ability with proven ability to multitask
  • Excellent oral and interpersonal skills to represent Calgary Academy stakeholders
  • Strong ability to work both independently in in team environments
  • Knowledge of fundraising practices and ethical standards
  • Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge is considered an asset
  • AFP membership or CFRE designation is an asset
